Unlocking Children's Potential Through Art Therapy: Chony’s Uplift Program

Art has long been a medium for self-expression, healing, and growth, and nowhere is this more evident than in Chony’s Art Room. Based in the Sunshine Coast Region, Chony’s Uplift Program integrates art therapy principles with visual arts education to nurture children's emotional, cognitive, and physical development.

A Holistic Approach to

The Uplift Program is designed to foster essential skills in young children, ensuring they develop emotionally, socially, and intellectually while engaging in creative expression. Through carefully structured art activities, children learn and grow in the following key areas:

Social & Emotional Capability

Art uniquely allows children to explore their emotions and build empathy. The Uplift Program encourages kids to communicate their needs, share materials, and take turns, helping them understand their feelings and those of others. Creating art also serves as an emotional outlet, reducing anxiety and fostering a sense of self-worth.

Physicality

Children refine their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination by engaging with art materials. The program supports large and small muscle development, allowing children to translate their thoughts and emotions into physical expressions through various artistic media.

Thinking & Responding

Art therapy sessions encourage problem-solving and critical thinking. Children follow simple step-by-step instructions and are guided to explore solutions to creative challenges. For example, when a sculpture doesn’t stand up, they are encouraged to think about why and how they can adjust it. This reflective process strengthens their ability to analyze, respond, and innovate.

Oral Language & Communication

Art sparks conversation, and Chony’s program capitalizes on this natural inclination. Children discuss their artistic choices, such as colors and materials, while also sharing their finished work with peers. To support early literacy, Chony often documents children’s verbal storytelling, demonstrating how spoken words can be translated into written text.

Access & Inclusion

Every child is unique, and the Uplift Program embraces inclusivity by differentiating expectations based on individual needs. Regardless of skill level or background, all children experience success and pride in their artistic journey. These sessions emphasize self-identity and acceptance, creating a safe and supportive learning environment.
